We have all heard talks from the authorities that a capsize drill should be conducted now and then to familarize our members on the “safety” procedures when a boat overturns. But nobody ever told us that you could be pinned under the 300kg boat while wearing a life jacket, until we came across this article reported today in The Straits Times.

Should we then alert the authorities on what we should do if we ever got stuck underneath the dragon boat with our life jackets on? I reckon we need to load oxygen tanks and masks like what they do in the planes. Eject from below our seats in case of emergency, whooosh! Pull over your head, cup your mouth, tighten those strings, and breathe! Easy Peasy.
Maybe they should waterproof and air-tight those masks since we are going underwater. Add a pair of goggles for some underwater viewing too?
Neat…

This seems like a classic case of shooting oneself in the foot. SDBA came up with numerous safety measures for dragonboating following the tragedy in Cambodia last Dec (surely with the Gahmen’s strong urging). In doing so, they may have inadvertently introduced a different set of risks. It would be ironical and tragic if someone actually drowned while participating in a capsize drill. Hmm…Does this mean that SDBA will be issuing a new set of safety guidelines for the conduct of capsize drills? How many more safety guidelines are we gonna need…

Not sure if this is an SDBA involved affair, the article did mention MOE Changi Coast Adventure Centre.
Dragonboating- worry about drowning.
Cycling- worry about run over by cars.
Driving- worry about collision with trucks.
Jogging- worry about being stride by lightning.
Walking on the road- worry about falling flower pots.
All the above don’t really scare me.
The most fearful to me is staying home and gets all the nagging from my #@$&%*(wife!)
Hehehehe….
Cheers!
Will be back in action soon.
Even if it is not a SDBA involved affair, they did implement the capsize drill.
We can flip a kayak with much ease, but a dragon boat… now that’s tricky! – Caron
